Actions Follow Thoughts

as the pebble tumbles down the hill
as the fish follows the bait
so too will your actions follow your thoughts

There is something I've noticed about the startup community, that a lot of people don't get, but should.

In the startup community, you tell someone about the business you're slaving away at, and they get excited and smile and encourage you and offer to help, they know that you are going to make it. Startuppers have faith, they don't let setbacks get them down for long.

I know why that is. Startuppers believe in themselves and what they can do.

Imagine this: you and a buddy are standing on the side of a river. Your buddy looks at the river and thinks 'I'm a terrible swimmer, the shore is too far away, I'm never gonna make it...'. In your head, you think 'Yah that shore is a ways away, but I know I can do it'. Who is most likely to make it across the river?

Obviously you. Your buddy is too scared to start. If you don't start, then how can you possibly make it? If you limit yourself mentally, how are you ever going to make progress? It's like going fishing, but you don't think you are going to catch anything, so you don't bring any fishing line. At least for me, I never succeed at the things I think I'll never succeed at.

If you believe that you'll never be rich, then you will never start trying, and you will therefore never be rich. If you believe that you have a great chance of being successful, then you will probably start trying, and just for trying you are already more successful than most people, and much more likely to be successful, than if you had never started trying.

Don't think you can do it? Well, you can't.

The first step to doing anything, is having faith that you can do it.
